Extra Driveways for suites, RVs, Boats, etc

Currently our bylaw generally al;lows for one driveway per SFD, and indicates any extra driveways be of the pervious consolidated variety (grasscrete, grasspave, porous concrete, brick pavers) and discourages crushed rock, gravel, grass, earth or other loose material.

We recently spoke with the building community about how to come closer together to assist the demands of the homeowner for inexpensive extra parking, and the municipal desire to follow the intent of the bylaw.

Has anyone else experienced pressure of this kind? Perhaps in a high growth area? Our growth is quite high and has been for a decade. We do not see an end to groth at the moment. We sit at 13,000 population and are a rural tourist water/wilderness community.

I am assuming that this is a concern in your built up areas, with smaller property foot prints, to allow for groundwater recharge and drainage concerns. Have you also had concerns with safety for traffic lines of sight, sidewalk blockage, and issues of propoerty standards for aesthetics? We have also had concerns with RVs being used as secondary dwellings.

So while we have similar concerns, it looks like they have come from different issues. We have abylaw that prohibits the storage of such extra vehicles in the front of the home, even on the existing driveway, but allows for that storage in the side or rear yards. With the new home development being a much smaller lot and higher lot coverage, for most new homes, this is no longer possible (ie the RV cant fit between the homes to get tot he rear yard!) Our council decided to leave the front yard restriction in place, but on onlyenforce upon complaint, so if the neighbours don't mind, there is no issue. Definitely not a happy solution for everyone, but this is wehere we stand now. We are population 17500, with a single suburban area of 9000 and then all agricultural/rural/water around.
